A Bit of Los Angeles Angels History: Nolan Ryan tied a Major League record by authoring his fourth career no-hitter as he white-washed the Baltimore Orioles, 1-0 before a crowd of 18,492 at Anaheim Stadium. Ryan equaled Sandy Koufax's Major League record and became the first American League pitcher to accomplish the feat. In fanning nine Orioles, Ryan ran his strikeout total to 53 for the quartet of no-nos. In posting the first no-hitter against Baltimore since Bo Belinsky held them hitless on May 5, 1962, Ryan enticed the Birds' second baseman and future Angels' Hall of Famer Bobby Grich on a called third strike for the final out. Observed Ryan after no-hitter No. 4: "I am a considerably different pitcher now. I'm more knowledgeable, I'm better able to control the curve and change-up and I have more confidence in myself. "I don't think I've reached my peak since my control still isn't what it should be. But then, I'm not sure anyone is really sure when he's reached his peak. I sometimes think you have to be past it before you're able to say, "hey, that was it, that's as good as I'm ever going to be." (source: MLB.com)
